Why We’re Building PhysioFix

A place to feel heard, supported and stronger.
By Maria Kristina (MK) Antonious, Registered Physiotherapist

Throughout my career—both as a physiotherapist and as a patient—I have seen how easily healthcare can become divided into separate symptoms, body parts and appointments.
Each professional may be doing their job well, but people can still be left wondering how the pieces fit together and what their next step should be.
That experience helped shape the vision my brother Mark and I share for PhysioFix & Wellness: a place where people feel heard, care makes sense and different professionals can contribute when their perspective would genuinely be helpful. Together, we want to create a place for people whose needs don’t fit neatly into a box, including those who need more time, clearer explanations and step-by-step support to move forward.

Different perspectives. Shared goals.
Every profession brings a different perspective. As a physiotherapist, I may focus on pain, strength, mobility and movement. A dietitian may explore whether nutrition, hydration or energy intake is supporting healing and recovery—or whether nutritional gaps could be contributing to recovery taking longer than expected. They may also help someone optimize energy, performance and long-term health. A psychologist may help address fear, stress, sleep difficulties or other barriers affecting recovery and participation in daily life.
The value comes from knowing when another perspective could help and, with your consent, communicating around goals that matter to you. You may need one professional or several. The plan should follow your needs and goals.

We want PhysioFix to work alongside family doctors, specialists and other community providers, with clear referrals when something needs further investigation. Seeing the whole person also means recognizing the limits of our own expertise.

Hands first. Technology with purpose.
PhysioFix will have exciting and innovative technology, but our machines will never be the most important part of what we do. Our hands, clinical reasoning, ability to listen and the relationship we build with each patient will always come first.
Technology should support good care—not replace it. When appropriate, 3D movement analysis can provide visual and objective measurements of posture, mobility, balance and functional movement. These measurements can help establish a baseline, make progress easier to understand and show us when a plan may need to change.
Other advanced treatment technologies may help us target certain conditions more precisely. No tool should be used simply because it is new or impressive. It should have a clear purpose, and you should understand why we are recommending it and how we will judge whether it is helping.

Our job is to help you become more independent
We don’t want people to feel that they have to depend on us forever. Our role is to guide, educate and coach—using hands-on care, exercise and movement retraining to help people understand and manage their own symptoms.
Someone may need more support at first and less as their confidence grows. The goal is to help people make informed decisions, understand their bodies and continue independently.

A place we would want our own family to use
We think about our mom wanting to start exercising. She enjoys being active, but making time for her own health when she is busy looking after everyone else is not always easy. We want her to have somewhere welcoming where someone can teach her step by step, answer her questions and help her feel confident.
An exercise professional could help her build a manageable routine, teach her how to perform the exercises and answer questions along the way. If pain becomes a barrier, a physiotherapist could help address it and adapt the plan. She might need regular guidance at first, then less support as she becomes comfortable exercising independently.
We also think about a parent or grandparent who feels unsteady. Their goal might be to walk outside confidently, keep up with their grandchildren or continue living independently. We could assess their balance and, when appropriate, use 3D movement analysis to record baseline measurements alongside the clinical assessment. From there, we could build a realistic program around their abilities, home environment and available support, then reassess to see what has changed and adjust what is not working.
Sometimes, reaching those goals means bringing in another perspective. A dietitian could help explore whether nutrition is supporting energy and recovery. Psychological support could help someone work through fear of falling, address stress or develop practical strategies for making their health a priority. We would also consider whether medical review is needed.
Collaboration matters within our own team, too. Different clinicians bring different strengths. That means sharing ideas and, with the person’s consent, involving a colleague whose experience could help move their care forward—while keeping everyone working toward the same goals.
That is what we mean by looking at the whole person: understanding what matters to them, what is getting in the way and what support could help. Then building a plan together that fits their real life, with the aim of helping them stay active, confident and independent for as long as possible.

Sleep Fix: our Vision in action
Our planned October 2026 grand opening, Sleep Fix, is an introduction to that approach: one everyday concern, explored through several professional perspectives.
From my physiotherapy perspective, I’ll discuss sleep comfort and positioning, including ways support may be adapted when a shoulder or neck is uncomfortable. We are also planning Pillowise fittings in the clinic. Our 30-day fit guarantee lets you try the pillow at home and exchange sizes in the clinic while we work with you to find the right fit—or receive your money back.
We are working toward including nutrition and psychology perspectives too, with practical conversations about eating routines, winding down and what to do when falling asleep or returning to sleep is difficult. The final speaker lineup and schedule will be announced once confirmed.
Visitors will be able to ask questions, meet the team, tour the clinic and explore brief free 3D movement screenings, along with door prizes and special Pillowise offers. Event screenings are an introduction to the technology, not a full physiotherapy assessment.

What we want PhysioFix to mean for our community
Our vision for PhysioFix is a place where we look at the whole person: how you move, how you feel, what matters to you and what is holding you back from living the life you want.
Different professionals can bring different pieces of that picture. By connecting those perspectives and building a plan together, we can help you better understand your body, recognize your options and take an active role in your health. Your goals should be what brings that care together.
Whether you want to feel stronger, regain your independence, return to something you love or have more energy for everyday life, we want PhysioFix to be a place that helps you move toward it. Somewhere you feel listened to, supported and increasingly confident in what you can do for yourself.
That is what “wellness” means to us: having the support, knowledge and tools to find a better balance, recharge and participate more fully in your own life. Our role is to help you establish a foundation, strengthen what’s working or optimize your health—with confidence in your next steps.

We look forward to welcoming you to PhysioFix at 1940 Bank Street, near Bank and Walkley in Ottawa.
